Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a third person action game that centers around allowing the player to reverse time. This game is developed by Ubisoft. It is the first 3D Prince of Persia game to be released on any platform.

The game's plot is simplistic, but it's conceived in an artistic manner. The player assumes the role of a nameless prince who must confront an evil villain known as the Vizier. The player can run, jump, run along walls, and swing on poles. Most of the game consists of exploring sparse areas of the prince's kingdom and pulling off complex platform maneuvers. The player can reverse time if he messes up, but only if he has enough sand power. The sand is collected by defeating enemies and destroying pots around the game's environment.

The sparse ambiance of the castle areas is only interrupted by intermittent fights with groups of enemies. The combat in Sands of Time is similar to the hack and slash combat found in other games of this nature. The game gets reasonably challenging during its second half. One of the final areas of the game forces the player to pull off a long platforming segment without the ability to reverse time. The player also teams up with a princess named Farah during several parts of this game. Developer Ubisoft did a great job making these parts feel artful and cinematic.

The controls in this game are very well done, but they are still far from perfect. The player may frequently end up messing up the same platforming segment without understanding why. The combat portions can also feel a little too tricky. Some enemies seem to block or deflect every single attack thrown at them. One cool effect within the game is seeing the enemies turn to sand. They freeze and get sucked into the player's dagger every time they are defeated.

The game has a very good presentation that adds to the cinematic quality Ubisoft was going for. This game isn't very long, but it's longer than some of the other Prince of Persia games like The Forgotten Sands. A dedicated player could probably finish it within a few days. There is little incentive to replay this game. There's also nothing to collect within the game world after the game is finished. The player can attempt to destroy all of the sand containers, but this doesn't seem to unlock anything.
